Benefits of Montessori
Children thrive when they feel capable and independent. The cry of the child is often “help me learn to do it for myself!” Montessori education teaches children the self-discipline to develop good work habits while also giving them a sense of responsibility for the greater classroom community. Below are some of the many benefits of Montessori:
- Focuses on the natural development of the child, providing materials created for sensitive periods of learning identified through scientific observation of children.
- The approach is individualized and self-paced, meeting children where they are at developmentally, allowing them to be challenged. Students are able to follow their interests and passions to develop strong skills in academics, leadership, self-discipline, responsibility, independence and initiative.
- Montessori students enjoy freedom within limits. Working within parameters set by their guides, students are active participants in deciding what their focus of learning will be. Montessorians understand that internal satisfaction drives the child’s curiosity and interest and results in joyous learning that is sustainable over a lifetime.
- Students are supported in becoming active seekers of knowledge. Guides provide environments where students have the tools and freedom to pursue answers to their own questions. Children learn to identify and correct their own mistakes developing a healthy relationship with error.
- Children have long, uninterrupted times to work and concentrate. The uninterrupted time allows them to absorb the material which strengthens their will and character.
- Children can see their trajectory of learning by observing the older children in the classroom.
- Students are part of a close, caring community. The multi-age classroom allows older students to enjoy stature as mentors and role models; younger children feel supported and gain confidence about the challenges ahead. Guides model respect, loving kindness, and a belief in peaceful conflict resolution
- No homework means more family and free time.
- No testing allows children to focus on learning and not memorizing.
